IBM Business Process Manager looks like a step in the right direction.  For what’s automated, and automatable (let’s agree that’s a word), it may even be perfect. But, for the forseeable future, most of the enterprise is not going to be automated, and it’s outside the CIO’s domain. So any enterprise platform has to be comprehensive (end-to-end process, not just what’s automated) and accessible (in the language of the business).

So far, IBM is following the product integration roadmap John Rymer and I laid out in our report published immediately following IBM’s acquisition of Lombardi.

… Although IBM has done a great job of delivering a unified repository …

But ultimately, IBM needs to provide legacy Lombardi and WPS customers with a clear vision and direction for merging the two BPM engines and development environments.

Neil Ward Dutton – MWD Advisors

With the release of Business Process Manager, IBM has absorbed the Lombardi DNA. Business Process Manager demonstrates a vital clarity of purpose in IBM for its customers and prospects, and should give those companies improved confidence that IBM has its story straight. What’s more, the promotion of former Lombardi technologies and design approaches to be front-and-centre in shaping the new Business Process Manager offering makes Business Process Manager stand out in terms of ease-of use.

James Taylor

The new Business Process Manager 7.5 brings together the WebSphere Lombardi Edition and WebSphere Process Server in a single go-forward product. IBM wanted to bring the power of the WPS runtime and the simplicity of the Lombardi platform while significantly improving design time governance and end to end  visibility.

Bruce Silver

I’m sure I’ll have a list of complaints and woulda-coulda-shouldas at some point (such as: where’s the BPMN 2.0 already?)… but for now, I could not have asked for more.  Sure, we all expected this as the eventual roadmap, but I think everyone is surprised they got it done already.

Sandy Kemsley

It’s important to look at how the IBM organization has realigned to allow for the new product release: Phil Gilbert, former president and CTO of Lombardi, now has overall responsibility for all of WebSphere BPM – including both the former Lombardi and WebSphere BPM products – plus ILOG rules management. […]  they gave him the opportunity to do exactly what he knew needed to be done: bring together all of the IBM BPM offerings into a unified offering. This new product announcement is the beginning of that unification, but they still have a ways to go.
